Katie Taylor’s Boxing Journey
Katie Taylor, the illustrious Irish boxer, revealed that she nearly ended her professional boxing career following her victory over Amanda Serrano last July. After completing a memorable trilogy against Serrano, Taylor, a two-time undisputed champion with an impressive record of 25 wins and just one loss, felt she had accomplished all she could in the sport, except for one last dream fight at Croke Park, the famed Irish national stadium.
Retirement Thoughts
“After the last fight, I spoke to my team and said, ‘If Croke Park doesn’t happen, I’m done.'”
Taylor disclosed during an appearance on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show”. Her conviction was clear: she was ready to hang up her gloves following a phenomenal decade in the sport. However, she refrained from officially announcing her retirement, clinging to a flicker of hope for her Croke Park ambition.
“In my mind, I was basically retired after that night.”
She reflected, recounting a post-fight conversation with her team where she expressed gratitude for her boxing journey.
Challenges in Securing Croke Park
Despite her growing fame, getting a fight at Croke Park had always felt elusive. She remarked that the idea of competing at the iconic venue was first floated roughly four years ago after her initial bout with Serrano in 2022, but obstacles, including prohibitive costs primarily linked to security, dashed those hopes multiple times. Ireland’s boxing landscape, which faced stagnation in the wake of past violence connected to the sport, had seen no major events taking place in Dublin until Taylor rejuvenated it this year with a bout against Chantelle Cameron at The 3Arena.
Promoter’s Commitment
Taylor’s dream did not seem entirely out of reach when her promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed his commitment to making the fight at Croke Park a reality, declaring he would do everything possible to secure it. The mood shifted dramatically in early 2026, and just recently, her manager Brian Peters confirmed the deal was complete, leaving Taylor ecstatic and slightly in disbelief.
“A few weeks ago, Brian indicated they were close, and just days ago, he told me all the contracts are signed. I was over the moon! I couldn’t have imagined this happening even months before.”
Upcoming Fight
Scheduled for September 5, Taylor will become the first headliner at the 80,000-seat venue, following in the footsteps of legends like Muhammad Ali, who fought there in 1972. This match against Flora Pili is set to be Taylor’s final appearance in the ring, and with a win, she has the chance to retire as a three-time undisputed champion.
“Ending my career at Croke Park is the pinnacle. I could not ask for a more iconic moment.”
However, she acknowledges the importance of her upcoming fight, keeping her focus on securing a victory in what she terms a dream send-off, saying,
“I have a fight to prepare for.”
