Paris has recently seen a setback in the boxing world as Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif sustained an injury to her left shoulder during a training session over the weekend. This unfortunate incident has led to the rescheduling of her upcoming match, initially set for April 23, against German competitor Julia Igel at the historic Salle Wagram in the heart of the French capital.

Organizers reported on Monday that a new date for the fight has not yet been established, as Khelif underwent a medical evaluation revealing a “painful syndrome” in her shoulder, which the medical team deemed temporarily incompatible with the rigors of competitive boxing.
“The health and physical integrity of our athletes remain our absolute priority,”
stated Brahim Asloum, the promoter of the event. He emphasized the importance of creating the best conditions for all participants, especially since the fight card was slated to feature two title bouts for the WBA.

In light of the rescheduling, ticket holders will be given refunds, ensuring that attendees are not left at a loss due to the unforeseen change in plans.
Challenges in Khelif’s Career
Khelif, who captured Olympic gold in the 2024 Games, has faced significant public interest, particularly regarding her and fellow boxer Lin Yu-ting’s gender identity. Both athletes faced challenges during the 2023 world championships when they were disqualified by the International Boxing Association, which claimed they did not meet certain eligibility criteria. However, the International Olympic Committee cleared them to compete, applying previous Olympic eligibility standards.
With World Boxing taking over the reins as the sport’s governing body, a new policy on sex eligibility was enacted last August, mandating genetic testing to identify the presence of a Y chromosome. Since then, Khelif has not participated in events under World Boxing’s authority. This latest injury has added another layer of complexity to her already scrutinized career.
