Errol Spence Jr. Set to Make Comeback Against Tim Tszyu This July in Australia

Errol Spence Jr. Makes Comeback

After a three-year hiatus from the ring, former champion Errol Spence Jr. is set to make his comeback on July 26, taking on Australia’s Tim Tszyu, as officially announced by Premier Boxing Champions on Thursday. This anticipated matchup is scheduled for a Sunday afternoon but will air at prime time on Saturday night in the United States via Amazon Prime pay-per-view, taking advantage of the time difference for boxing fans.

Spence’s Recent History

Spence, who boasts a record of 28 wins with 22 knockouts, last stepped into the ring in July 2023, where he suffered a defeat to Terence Crawford during a contest for the undisputed welterweight title. Aged 36, Spence had been in discussions to fight WBC champion Sebastian Fundora for much of 2024, yet those negotiations did not solidify. Additionally, the fighter has been navigating a legal dispute with his former coach, Derrick James, over alleged unpaid compensation from their collaborations.

Tszyu’s Recent Challenges

On the other side of the ring, Tszyu, holding a record of 27 wins and 18 knockouts, claimed the vacant WBO super welterweight title in October 2023 by triumphing over Brian Mendoza. However, his journey faced setbacks when he lost to Fundora in March 2024 and suffered a devastating knockout against Bakhram Murtazaliev later that year. Since those challenges, Tszyu has participated in four matches, gaining three victories against lesser-known opponents, yet was unable to overcome Fundora in a rematch in July.

Training Changes for Tszyu

In pursuit of improvement, Tszyu has switched trainers after parting ways with Igor Goloubev. He initially worked under Pedro Diaz in Miami for two successful outings but has now decided to train with renowned boxing figure Jeff Fenech as he gears up for this significant fight against Spence.
