Abdul Khan, who has achieved victory in three of his 14 professional boxing matches via stoppage, will soon take center stage in a significant career challenge. The 23-year-old featherweight is set to face Liam Fitzmaurice at Wembley this Saturday, marking a pivotal moment for the representation of British South Asian boxers. Khan’s connection to his famed cousin, former world champion Amir Khan, has been instrumental in shaping his boxing journey. The younger Khan recalls being just a toddler when Amir captured hearts across the UK with a stunning silver medal performance at the 2004 Athens Olympics. By 2010, Abdul was a captivated seven-year-old watching Amir’s thrilling fight against Marcos Maidana.
Although Abdul acknowledges the impact of his cousin’s legacy in easing his entry into the sport, he is eager to carve out his unique identity.
“Being known as his cousin was always going to be like that because of what Amir achieved,”
Abdul explained, crediting Amir for opening doors in his boxing career. Yet, he explained, it’s not enough to simply enter those doors; the real test lies in proving oneself worthy to remain.

Despite this family lineage, Abdul’s background tells a different story of resilience. Following his parents’ separation when he was just ten, he took on a significant responsibility at home, becoming the primary support for his mother and two sisters.
“I’m the man of my house and I have been since I was 10,”
he shared, emphasizing the challenges he faced without his father’s support. Boxing served as a sanctuary for him, helping him find purpose and direction during tough times.
Amateur Success and Professional Aspirations
As an amateur, Abdul clinched the national youth ABA title and considered the COVID-19 lockdown a catalyst that prompted his early turn to professional boxing. He cites Amir as a crucial mentor, always available to offer guidance and steadfast advice about surrounding himself with supportive individuals and committing fully to his craft.
In his training at Elite Boxing Gym in Bolton, under Alex Matvienko, Abdul had the rare opportunity to spar with the renowned Terence Crawford, an experience he describes as invaluable. Looking ahead, he harbors aspirations of contending for a world title within the next few years and dreams of fighting in Pakistan, a country he cherishes due to his family ties and love for its culture.
