Travel Disruptions for South Africa’s National Football Team
South Africa’s national football team is facing travel disruptions ahead of their participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a crucial flight from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport to Mexico delayed from its original schedule. The flight, initially set to arrive on Sunday morning, has been rescheduled to depart on Monday morning due to issues surrounding visa processing for several team members.
Visa Approval Issues
At least 20 individuals from the travel party, which includes players and staff, are still awaiting their visa approvals from the U.S. Embassy, with reports indicating that some technical staff have already had their applications denied. In response to the situation, the country’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, took to social media over the weekend to express his frustration, labeling the situation an “embarrassment” and stating that it was making South Africa look foolish.
However, in a later update on Sunday evening, McKenzie provided a more positive outlook, confirming that all players had received their visas aside from a handful of officials, including an assistant coach, team doctor, head of security, and one analyst. He assured fans that the charter flight would indeed depart the following day.
Upcoming Matches
The Bafana Bafana, as the South African national team is known, are scheduled to engage in a friendly match against Jamaica prior to their World Cup debut against the host nation, Mexico, at the Estadio Azteca on June 11.
SAFA’s Statement and Additional Challenges
The South African Football Association (SAFA) issued a statement to clarify the ongoing visa difficulties encountered by the team. They expressed hope that the situation would be resolved quickly, allowing the squad to arrive in Mexico City just in time for the tournament’s opening match.
Compounding the recent bureaucratic challenges, South Africa’s football team suffered a three-point deduction in World Cup qualifying due to a suspension of midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who played against Lesotho in March 2025 despite having accumulated enough yellow cards for a ban. This incident was attributed by SAFA to a miscommunication stemming from the team’s management, particularly related to the absence of the team manager during the match.
