Injury Announcement

In a significant setback for both Brazil and the San Diego Wave FC, forward Dudinha revealed on Wednesday that preliminary examinations have detected injuries to her right knee’s ACL and meniscus. She anticipates a lengthy recovery period due to these injuries. The announcement was made on her Instagram account shortly after she sustained the injury during a match against the United States, which Brazil lost 1-0. The incident occurred in the 33rd minute when Dudinha collided with U.S. defender Emily Sonnett, leading to her being carried off the field on a stretcher.

Season Performance

Dudinha had been shining in the current NWSL season, emerging as one of the league’s standout players. With five goals and four assists, she has significantly contributed to the Wave’s strong performance, helping them secure the top spot in the NWSL standings as the league heads into a break for the Men’s World Cup. At the midpoint of the season, her combined contributions of nine goals and assists place her in joint second place among NWSL players.

Match Controversy

The match against the U.S. was marred by controversy, characterized by a series of penalties and red cards. A total of eight red cards were issued—four to members of Team Brazil, including players, and an additional four to their staff—alongside nine yellow cards. Brazil committed 20 of the 28 fouls called during the tense game. After the match, Brazil’s coach, Arthur Elias, expressed his dissatisfaction with the officiating, stating:

“I felt disrespected by the refereeing today; it was a violation of the integrity of the match.”

He emphasized that the officiating influenced the course of the game but acknowledged the U.S. team’s competent performance.

Looking Ahead

The Wave’s next match is scheduled for July 4 as the NWSL returns from its break, but Dudinha’s absence will be a notable loss for the team.
