Insights from Myles Turner on Coaching Dynamics
In a recent appearance on the “Game Recognize Game” podcast with Breanna Stewart, Myles Turner, the center for the Milwaukee Bucks, opened up about the chaotic atmosphere during Doc Rivers’ coaching tenure. Turner highlighted a notable absence of discipline within the team, revealing that Rivers rarely imposed fines on players for infractions such as tardiness.
Discipline and Accountability Issues
Turner specifically pointed to the franchise’s star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, as someone who often took advantage of this lax environment, stating that the two-time MVP frequently arrived at practices and meetings at his own convenience.
“It was an easy answer,”
he remarked when asked who was often late, adding,
“Giannis is going to show up whenever he wants.”
Turner expressed that seeing this behavior without repercussions prompted a mindset shift among teammates.
“Guys were late all the time,”
Turner recalled.
“It was one of the craziest things I personally experienced.”
He suggested that as the season progressed, he learned to adjust his own schedule, planning to arrive an hour late to flights, for example.
Season Conclusion and Coaching Changes
The Bucks concluded their disappointing season with a 32-50 record, ending a nine-year playoff streak, which ultimately led to Rivers being let go from his position. Reports surfaced suggesting a persistent disconnect between Rivers and the players, with low-effort practices and unresolved tensions highlighted as significant issues during the season.
Following Rivers’ departure, former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins has been appointed to take over the coaching duties. As the Bucks navigate their future directions, particularly with Antetokounmpo expressing a potential desire for change, Turner remains cautious about what the new leadership will bring.
He shared that in his previous experiences, there had always been a clear structure regarding discipline and accountability, a contrast to the last season under Rivers. How Jenkins establishes order could play a critical role in reshaping the team culture moving forward.
