Terry Rozier’s Legal Developments
Terry Rozier has made a formal request to a federal judge for changes to the conditions of his release tied to an ongoing gambling case. His legal counsel, Jim Trusty, argues that the current stipulations are being used to undermine Rozier’s arbitration proceedings regarding his salary and limit his chances of entering the NBA free agency market.
Request for Communication Changes
In a recent court document, Trusty sought the removal of a condition preventing Rozier from communicating with the Charlotte Hornets, the team that traded him to the Miami Heat earlier this year. This development is particularly significant as Rozier is currently involved in arbitration with both the NBA and the Heat concerning his base salary for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Initial rulings from the arbitrator indicated that Rozier would be entitled to his salary; however, it was later established that the restrictions on contact with the Hornets could lead to a breach of his contractual obligations to play in the league. This presents a serious potential setback, especially with the NBA’s free agency period commencing on June 30, 2024.
Impact of No-Contact Rule
Trusty emphasized that maintaining the no-contact rule regarding the Hornets would severely limit Rozier’s prospects of playing for any NBA team. In the court filing, Trusty explained:
“An inability to engage with or compete against the Charlotte Hornets could be interpreted as a failure to fulfill his contract, significantly affecting Rozier’s opportunities with NBA franchises.”
While federal prosecutors have agreed to lift a similar restriction in place for the Miami Heat, they are pushing back against any changes concerning the Hornets. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York has not commented on the matter.
Ongoing Legal Challenges
Rozier, who has pled not guilty to multiple charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, is set to face arraignment on June 10 for further allegations related to sports bribery and honest services fraud. This legal turmoil follows his arrest in October related to a gambling operation that allegedly involved his performance during a game played while he was still with the Hornets.
Although he was traded to the Heat in January 2024, he found himself waived by the team shortly after on April 10. ESPN has reached out to the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association for further comments, with both entities remaining silent thus far.
