Simeone Confident Álvarez Will Feature in Champions League Clash Against Arsenal

Diego Simeone’s Confidence in Julián Álvarez

Diego Simeone, manager of Atlético Madrid, expressed confidence that forward Julián Álvarez will be ready for the upcoming Champions League semifinal second leg against Arsenal, despite sustaining an injury in the first leg, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Álvarez was instrumental in the match, equalizing from the penalty spot after Viktor Gyökeres had put the visitors ahead, but had to be substituted in the 77th minute due to a challenge with Eberechi Eze.

Álvarez’s Impact and Injury Update

The Argentina international has made quite an impact this season, having netted 10 goals in the Champions League, making him the first player in Atlético’s history to achieve this milestone in the competition. Following the match, Simeone indicated that Álvarez would undergo a test to evaluate the extent of his injury.

“We’re hoping it’s not serious. My inclination is always towards optimism,”

he told Movistar.

Team Updates and Recovery Hopes

In addition to Álvarez, winger Giuliano Simeone also had to leave the pitch at halftime due to a first-half knock, while Alexander Sørloth was left on the bench after reporting discomfort during warm-ups. Nevertheless, Simeone remains hopeful about their recovery:

“Knowing the players, I expect all of them to be available for the match in London on Tuesday,”

he stated.

Focus on Champions League

Currently, Atlético Madrid’s focus shifts entirely to the Champions League, as they find themselves trailing behind Barcelona and Real Madrid in LaLiga and recently faced a setback by losing the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad earlier this month.

Match Atmosphere and Upcoming Challenge

Reflecting on the match atmosphere, Simeone remarked,

“I can’t recall experiencing an ambiance like the one we had at the beginning of this game. The first half saw Arsenal performing better, but there were few clear shots on goal. After making some adjustments in the second half, I sensed our opponents were beginning to show signs of fatigue from their extensive schedule. As leaders of the Premier League and contenders for the Champions League title, they carry a significant burden.”

He acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge ahead in London, emphasizing the necessity of securing a lead.

Upcoming Match Details

The highly anticipated second leg is scheduled for May 5 at The Emirates Stadium in London, where Atlético will aim to clinch a spot in the Champions League final.
