Sam Kerr sets new record as Chelsea’s leading scorer in the Women’s Super League

Sam Kerr Becomes Chelsea’s Leading Scorer

In a remarkable achievement, Sam Kerr has etched her name into Chelsea’s history books by becoming the club’s leading scorer in the Women’s Super League, reaching a total of 64 goals following her latest strike on Sunday. This milestone saw her overtake Fran Kirby on the all-time scoring list for the team.

Match Highlights

Kerr showcased her aerial prowess at the King Power Stadium, rising above defenders to direct a header from Niamh Charles’ cross past Leicester City’s goalkeeper, Katie Keane, giving Chelsea an initial lead of 1-0. The match ultimately ended with a 3-1 victory for Chelsea, assisted by a stellar performance from Lauren James, who scored twice, narrowing their deficit to six points behind Manchester City, who currently sit at the top of the league with just one game left in the season.

Kerr’s Journey

The 32-year-old forward’s road to this moment has not been easy. Following a serious injury that saw her suffering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in January 2024 and missing the entire subsequent campaign, Kerr made her return to Chelsea in September this year.

Accolades and Achievements

Since joining Chelsea in 2019 after spells with Perth Glory and the Chicago Red Stars, Kerr has accumulated significant accolades, including being awarded the Golden Boot twice, with remarkable seasons producing 21 goals in 2020-21 and 20 goals in 2021-22. She has also played a pivotal role in helping the team secure five consecutive WSL titles under the guidance of coach Emma Hayes. As of now, Kerr stands just three goals shy of Kirby for the club’s all-competition scoring record.
