Rodri Focuses on World Cup Amid Transfer Speculation
Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder, has indicated that he prefers to set aside discussions about his future until the conclusion of the World Cup. Amid speculation of a potential summer transfer to Real Madrid, where he has been cited as a target by Enrique Riquelme, a candidate in the upcoming club presidential election, he is keen to focus on the national team for the time being.
Commitment to the National Team
Currently under contract with Manchester City until 2027, Rodri joined the Spanish squad at their pre-World Cup training camp in Las Rozas, Madrid, where he spoke to the media on Monday. He emphasized his commitment to the tournament and declared,
“We’re here to talk about the World Cup. In terms of my future, I’ll wait until the World Cup is over.”
Real Madrid’s Interest
Real Madrid, coming off two seasons without securing a major trophy, is looking to bolster their roster. Riquelme, who is in the running to become the club president, expressed interest in Rodri during a recent interview with ESPN, stating that he is exactly the type of player who should don a Real Madrid jersey. In response to such rumors, Rodri noted,
“It’s normal for players’ names to be linked with certain clubs. I’m focusing on my role as captain of the national team. My responsibility is to lead, and my only job is to help Spain succeed in this World Cup… I won’t waste time worrying about transfers, we’ll see what happens after the tournament.”
Overcoming Challenges
The midfielder, who has faced challenges due to injuries—including a cruciate ligament tear that occurred in September 2024—has worked hard to regain his spot in the City lineup, participating in 21 league matches during the 2025-26 season. He expressed optimism, saying,
“I’m very happy and excited. It’s the first time I’ve arrived fresh, without so many games. I’ve been able to overcome everything and am coming in with less rhythm, but fewer matches under my belt.”
