Ricardo Pepi’s Journey from World Cup Exclusion to 2026 Roster Inclusion

Ricardo Pepi’s Career Transformation

Ricardo Pepi reflects on a significant transformation in his career trajectory, transitioning from exclusion from the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to being selected for the upcoming 2026 tournament. It was a disappointing moment for Pepi when he received a phone call from former coach Gregg Berhalter in November 2022, informing him he wouldn’t be part of the squad for the World Cup.

Fast forward to May 22, 2026, and Pepi, now a mature and developed player, was overcome with emotion when current coach Mauricio Pochettino invited him to join the roster for this year’s tournament.

“I showed it to him and he immediately started just like crying a little bit,”

said Pepi, reflecting on the moment when he shared the news with his father, Daniel.

Overcoming Disappointment

Being overlooked in 2022 was disheartening, but Pepi channeled that disappointment to fuel his improvement as a player. At just 23 years old and nicknamed Rico by his teammates, Pepi has made a mark as one of the three forwards vying for a spot in the lineup, joining Folarin Balogun and Haji Wright as they prepare for the team’s World Cup debut against Paraguay on June 12. With an impressive record of 13 goals in 36 international matches prior to the team’s final tune-up against Germany, Pepi’s skills have been recognized by his coach, who praised him as a “killer” on the field.

Recent Career Highlights

Pepi’s recent career highlights include recovering from his earlier struggles with FC Augsburg in Germany, where he failed to score in 16 matches before being loaned to FC Groningen. Despite Groningen’s relegation, Pepi showcased his talent at PSV Eindhoven, scoring 19 goals in the most recent season, including contributions in the Champions League despite overcoming injuries, such as a torn meniscus and a fractured arm.

Personal Growth and Commitment

Reflecting on his journey, Pepi noted the stark contrast between the player he was four years ago and who he is today.

“Just looking at myself four years ago, obviously the player that I am now is way different, just better in those small spaces, just improved my game,”

he said. His progression has not only been personal but has also involved a commitment to the USMNT over the Mexican national team, which resulted from family discussions back in August 2021. Pepi wasted no time making an impact, netting a crucial goal and providing assists in his international debut, helping the U.S. secure a comeback win against Honduras during World Cup qualifiers.

Teammate Support

Teammate Christian Pulisic emphasized Pepi’s merit for the 2026 squad, stating,

“He has continued to work really hard when he’s in camp. At his club level, he continues to keep a high level, scores goals, does all the things well, and that’s why his time is now.”

Looking Ahead

As Pepi gears up to contribute his unique scoring instinct and playmaking abilities in the World Cup, his evolution from a young player facing rejection to a confident forward displays resilience and the promise of impactful performances in the global spotlight.
