Pochettino Senses Surging Excitement for U.S. Soccer as World Cup Approaches

Excitement Surrounds U.S. Soccer Fans

In a thrilling atmosphere at Soldier Field, Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiasm displayed by American fans during the United States’ 2-1 defeat to Germany on Saturday. This match, which served as the final tune-up before the World Cup, drew an impressive crowd of 63,636. Just a few days prior, a turnout of 57,741 had witnessed the U.S. triumph over Senegal in Charlotte, North Carolina, highlighting a growing interest in soccer among U.S. audiences.

Players Reflect on Fan Engagement

Defender Sergiño Dest admitted he was “pretty surprised” by the high attendance in Charlotte, and both Pochettino and midfielder Tyler Adams sang praises for the spirited fans in Chicago. Reflecting on the evolving excitement around the U.S. soccer team, Pochettino acknowledged his earlier misjudgment of fan engagement levels.

“Maybe my expectation, or my mistake, was expecting the excitement around the U.S. team a year and a half ago to be what it is today,”

he conceded. The coach emphasized the need to rekindle that passion, adding,

“When we started this journey towards the World Cup a year and a half ago, maybe we expected too much too soon. But now you can really feel it.”

Challenges Ahead for the U.S. Team

The road to the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. automatically qualified for as a host nation, has posed challenges in rallying the American soccer fans. Prior to this spring, only one U.S. match had attracted over 35,000 spectators, while many others fell below 21,000. However, recent friendlies, despite outcomes that included multiple goal deficits, have drawn significant crowds and rekindled anticipation.

Positive Atmosphere in Chicago

Adams remarked on the remarkable atmosphere, saying,

“These are the atmospheres we need. I mean, obviously Chicago’s an unreal sport city and they love football, but it’s incredible to be sent off like that with fans that are so passionate about the game.”

Match Highlights

The match began on a rough note for the U.S. as Kai Havertz netted a goal just seconds into the game. However, the team quickly regrouped and showcased their resilience, responding with a stunning equalizer just before the half courtesy of Antonee Robinson. Despite Leroy Sané restoring Germany’s lead with a goal in the 57th minute, the U.S. continued to pressure the German defense, creating several opportunities in the closing moments.

“You concede a goal from the beginning, the first action of the game, and then the reaction was really positive,”

Pochettino noted, praising his team’s character. The statistics underscored their performance, as the U.S. outshot Germany 11 to 7 over a crucial period of the match.

Looking Ahead

With the World Cup just days away, the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is set to kick off their tournament run against Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, where they hope to harness the growing excitement from their fans and translate it into success on the pitch.
