Philadelphia Union Overhaul: Coach Bradley Carnell Dismissed as Team Struggles

Philadelphia Union Shake-Up

In a significant shake-up, the Philadelphia Union, currently languishing at the bottom of Major League Soccer’s standings, have parted ways with head coach Bradley Carnell. This decision was announced on Wednesday and comes alongside the appointment of Jon Scheer as the new sporting director.

Interim Coaching Change

Ryan Richter, who led the Union’s developmental squad, Philadelphia Union II, will step in as the interim head coach. This change follows a disappointing start to the season, with the Union recording only one win, ten losses, and four draws, placing them at the bottom of the 30-team league.

Carnell’s Dismissal

Carnell’s dismissal marks a stark turnaround for a coach who had only led the Union to the best regular-season record in MLS less than a year ago, taking them to the playoffs as the top seed where they fell short in the quarterfinals.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, principal owner Jay Sugarman commended Carnell for his professionalism while expressing faith in Richter during this transition period. Richter previously served as an assistant coach for the first team from 2022 to 2024 before moving to lead the Union II program in January 2025.

Meanwhile, Jon Scheer, who has been part of the Union organization since 2018 and has held multiple positions including director of academy and professional development, will now take on a more prominent leadership role as sporting director.
