Neymar sidelined for initial Brazil training due to calf evaluations ahead of World Cup

Neymar’s Injury Update

Neymar’s participation in Brazil’s opening training session for the World Cup was halted on Wednesday as he underwent additional medical assessments on his injured right calf, as confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). This injury has kept the forward out of action since May 17, when he last played in Santos’ loss to Coritiba in the Brasileirão.

Medical Assessments

To gain a clearer understanding of Neymar’s condition, the CBF’s medical staff conducted further tests, which included an MRI examination, led by head physician Rodrigo Lasmar, who accompanied Neymar to the clinic.

Training Facility and Upcoming Matches

Earlier on the same day, Neymar arrived at the national team’s training facility in Teresópolis, situated just outside of Rio de Janeiro, reuniting with his teammates. However, with the results of medical evaluations pending, it seems unlikely that he will participate in Brazil’s initial friendly match against Panama this Sunday in Brasília, which will serve as their first warm-up before the World Cup. Subsequently, another friendly is arranged against Egypt on June 5.

Neymar’s Response

Despite worries regarding his health status, Neymar attempted to downplay the situation on Tuesday, watching Santos secure a 3-0 triumph over Deportivo Cuenca in the Copa Sudamericana. When inquiries about his injury surfaced, Neymar responded with a light-hearted quip:

“What problem?”

Training Session Attendance

The only other player missing from the training session attended by 23 squad members was right-back Danilo, who had played the entire match in a Copa Libertadores group-stage finale just the night before, which ended in victory against Cusco. The squad will also include players joining from various clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos and Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel Martinelli, who are expected to link up with the team after participating in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday.
