Victor Wembanyama’s Incident with Jalen Brunson
Victor Wembanyama, the standout player for the San Antonio Spurs, will not face a flagrant foul regarding his incident with New York Knicks‘ guard Jalen Brunson during Game 3 of the NBA Finals. According to a statement made by an NBA representative to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday evening, Wembanyama’s postseason record for flagrant points will remain at two.
Details of the Incident
Players who accumulate four flagrant points automatically face a suspension. The incident in question took place with 4:44 left in the first quarter of Monday’s match, when Brunson tried to set a screen near the free-throw line. When Wembanyama pivoted, he forcefully pushed Brunson, causing the guard to hit the floor. Despite the Knicks’ immediate complaints, no foul was called at the time.
Referee’s Statement
Earlier on Tuesday, Monty McCutchen, the NBA’s senior vice president of referee development and training, stated on “NBA Today” that the referees should have awarded a foul for that play. Nonetheless, the league opted not to elevate the ruling to a flagrant foul.
Wembanyama’s Previous Flagrant Points
Wembanyama’s two flagrant points were previously incurred in the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he received a flagrant foul 2 for striking Naz Reid above the neck, which led to his ejection. However, he did not face any additional sanctions afterwards.
