Knicks Face Uncertainty with Mitchell Robinson
The New York Knicks are facing uncertainty regarding the availability of center Mitchell Robinson for the opening game of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. This concern arises after Robinson underwent surgery last week to repair a broken finger.
According to a report from Shams Charania of ESPN, the 7-foot player has expressed a strong desire to participate in the upcoming game, although he still needs to receive clearance from the team’s medical staff.
Robinson’s Injury Details
Robinson sustained a fracture to the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand, yet he managed to engage in some light shooting and dribbling during the NBA Finals media day practice. Head coach Mike Brown has not confirmed whether Robinson will play, stating:
“He did some individual stuff [Monday]. I’m about to talk to our medical people to see what he can do [Tuesday].”
During the practice session, Robinson sported a black wrap on his shooting hand and right wrist, but he did not elaborate on the circumstances of his injury and was not available for media questioning. Charania reported that the injury occurred at Robinson’s home just prior to New York’s first Finals appearance since 1999.
Robinson’s Playoff Performance
At 28 years old, Robinson has participated in 13 out of 14 playoff games this season, averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds over approximately 14 minutes per game off the bench. He was notably absent during Game 2 of New York’s sweep against the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals due to illness.
Robinson previously made a significant impact in the Knicks’ NBA Cup championship victory against the Spurs, where he recorded four points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks in just 18 minutes. New York aims to secure its first NBA championship title since 1973.
