Manchester United’s Transfer Strategy
Manchester United has no intention of entering a financial contest with Manchester City for the signing of Elliot Anderson, as they aim to strengthen their midfield this summer, according to information obtained by ESPN. The club has been monitoring the 23-year-old for a while and has identified him as a key target in their upcoming midfield overhaul.
Price Tag Concerns
However, Nottingham Forest has set a hefty price tag of approximately £120 million ($162 million) for the English midfielder, who is also on Manchester City’s radar. Despite having financial resources available for transfers this summer, United perceives this valuation as significantly overpriced and is cautious about engaging in a bidding war with their city rivals that could further inflate the costs.
Funding and Future Targets
United aims to fund their top midfield acquisition through player sales, which they estimate could yield between £80 million and £90 million. This strategy would enable them to retain a substantial portion of their transfer budget for pursuing additional targets, such as a left winger, as well as potentially a centre-back or full-back.
Nottingham Forest’s Justification
Nottingham Forest insists that their asking price for Anderson is reasonable, especially considering his anticipated importance for the England national team in the World Cup and the fact that he is contracted to the club until 2029. Their valuation is also linked to market trends, such as Moisés Caicedo’s transfer from Brighton to Chelsea for £115 million ($155 million) last year.
Wage Structure and Player Departures
In addition, Manchester United is looking to adhere to a new wage structure this summer, with high earners including Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho likely to be shown the door in efforts to maintain a sustainable salary budget. Earlier, United believed they were in a strong position to acquire Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth this winter but lost interest after Semenyo’s agents discussed terms with Manchester City.
Alternative Options
Should securing Anderson prove difficult, United has a list of alternative midfield candidates, including Carlos Baleba, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Sandro Tonali. Meanwhile, while there has been no official approach to Atalanta regarding Éderson, it has been reported that Atlético Madrid is in communication with the Italian club regarding a possible deal.
