Mallory Swanson’s Return to the USWNT
Mallory Swanson is set to return to the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) for the first time since welcoming her child in November 2024. She will participate in two upcoming matches against Brazil, scheduled for June 6 and June 9, marking a significant comeback for the forward.
Reuniting the “Triple Espresso” Trio
Swanson, along with fellow forward Sophia Wilson—who also recently returned from maternity leave—will bring back the dynamic trio known as “Triple Espresso”, reuniting with Trinity Rodman for the first time since they played in the 2024 Olympic gold medal match where Swanson clinched victory by scoring the decisive goal against Brazil.
Significance of Upcoming Matches
Head coach Emma Hayes announced a 26-member roster for the upcoming Brazil tour, with the games being particularly significant as they occur just over a year prior to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup set to be held in Brazil.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had that front three together since the Olympic final. We must utilize every second of our time together to strengthen our squad,”
Hayes stated during a press conference.
Swanson’s return is crucial, following Wilson’s re-entry into the squad in April after giving birth last September. The absence of both players from the pitch, compounded by Rodman’s injuries, had prevented the trio from aligning on the field since the Olympic victory in August 2024.
Upcoming Matches and Team Dynamics
The matches in São Paulo and Fortaleza will be the last for this squad until October as they gear up for World Cup qualifying rounds that commence in November. Hayes reiterated the urgency of rekindling the chemistry among the key offensive players:
“We acknowledge the depth we have developed but those three players have earned their place; they were pivotal in winning the gold medal. It’s vital to start rebuilding their connections immediately.”
Swanson’s Recent Performance
Swanson made her return to competitive play on May 16 with the Chicago Stars, and in her second match back, she helped secure a 1-0 win against Bay FC scoring the only goal. If she features in the game against Brazil, it will signify a lengthy absence of 604 days from the national team, with her last appearance dating back to October 2024.
Coaching Insights and Roster Changes
Hayes expressed confidence in Swanson’s preparedness:
“She feels she’s in a solid state now and is ready to reintegrate and contribute to the team. The adjustments that come with being a new mother, from sleep patterns to feeding schedules, need to be in sync, and she knows she has my support in that process. We would not have included her if she wasn’t prepared; however, she feels ready and is enthusiastic about her return.”
This latest roster for the USWNT has seen considerable changes since Swanson last played, with 32 new caps awarded since Hayes took the helm. While she aims to field a team that showcases players expected to feature in the upcoming World Cup, injuries have sidelined potential starters. Midfielder Sam Coffey recently had knee surgery, while forward Catarina Macario and defender Naomi Girma are also dealing with injuries, with Girma’s recovery seeming imminent according to Hayes.
Final Thoughts on the Brazil Matches
As the United States prepares to face Brazil—a team currently ranked sixth in FIFA standings—opportunities for building synergy and momentum are critical. The full squad for the upcoming matches includes a mix of seasoned players alongside newer talents, aiming to establish a strong front as the World Cup approaches.
