Hatton Family Finds Comfort in Public Support Following Ricky’s Passing

Tribute to Ricky Hatton

In the wake of Ricky Hatton’s tragic passing last September at the age of 46, his son Campbell has expressed a profound appreciation for the public support the family has received during their time of loss. The former boxing champion, well-loved by fans, was laid to rest in October amid an outpouring of grief from the community, with thousands gathering along the route from Hyde to Manchester Cathedral to pay their respects.

Public Support and Personal Grief

Reflecting on this overwhelming support, Campbell Hatton mentioned, “As a family, we haven’t had the chance to grieve privately, and while that has its drawbacks, the positive side is the kindness of strangers. Many people approached us to share memories and offer their sympathies, which we consider a blessing.”

To Campbell, Ricky was not just a legendary figure in boxing but his father, and he remarked that the loss resonates beyond their family.

“It’s heartbreaking for more than just Manchester. The whole nation and the sport itself mourn his loss, yet to me, he’s just my dad.”

Honoring a Legacy

The sentiment of pride in Ricky’s legacy was palpable during the funeral procession, where Campbell was taken aback by the sheer number of people who turned out to honor his father.

“For three solid hours, there wasn’t a patch of pavement visible. We always knew he was cherished, but seeing that in person was incredibly moving. We cannot thank everyone enough for their support,” he shared.

Upcoming Tribute Event

As the family continues to navigate their grief, they are organizing a tribute event titled “Evening4Ricky” set for June 7 at the Manchester Arena, a venue significant to Ricky’s successful boxing career. This event aims to be a vibrant celebration honoring his legacy.

“I believe everyone connected with boxing will want to attend, highlighting the impact he had on so many lives. The atmosphere will undoubtedly be joyful rather than somber,” Campbell noted.

Establishment of the Ricky Hatton Foundation

In the aftermath of his father’s passing, Campbell is also committed to the establishment of the Ricky Hatton Foundation, a charity founded with the mission of raising awareness and addressing mental health challenges. The foundation sprang into existence only a month after Ricky’s death and strives to combat stigma while providing support through various therapeutic and community initiatives. Ricky had been open about his own mental health struggles throughout his life, particularly following his retirement from boxing.

Addressing Mental Health Challenges

Acknowledging the ongoing crisis regarding mental health, Campbell remarked,

“This issue is not going away on its own. I lost a close friend to suicide shortly before my dad died, and it highlights the urgent need for action. While awareness has increased in recent years, implementing real change is complex. Talking openly is crucial, and I personally benefit from it every week.”

He emphasized how his father worked tirelessly to advocate for mental health, believing it was his purpose post-boxing.

“We owe it to him to keep that mission alive,” Campbell concluded, as he seeks to honor his father’s legacy through continued support and activism in mental health awareness.

Community Support

With sports communities closely rallying behind them, the Hatton family stands united in their commitment to celebrating Ricky’s life while also addressing the vital issue of mental health in society.
