Reviving Real Madrid’s Glory
Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, has emphasized that the key to reviving the team’s glory lies in securing a skilled coach, specifically mentioning José Mourinho as a suitable candidate. Pérez’s remarks come during a challenging period for the club, which has experienced two seasons without any significant trophies, a situation that has persisted through the leadership of three different coaches: Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Álvaro Arbeloa.
Pérez’s Confidence in Current Squad
In a recent interview with the Spanish broadcaster TVE, Pérez expressed confidence in the current squad, highlighting star players such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, Federico Valverde, and Aurélien Tchouameni as among the best in the world. He believes that the right managerial appointment could usher in a new golden era for Real Madrid, stating:
“A good coach, with all these players, is going to make them part of another very important era in Real Madrid history.”
The Future of Mourinho and Club Elections
José Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, was labeled by Pérez as “a good coach, clearly”. However, the future of Mourinho’s potential return might hinge on the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections at the club, with Pérez facing opposition from businessman Enrique Riquelme for the first time since 2006.
Riquelme has already indicated his intent to unveil specific strategies, including new signings, during the election campaign. He notably suggested that Manchester City’s Rodri represents the type of player that aligns with Real Madrid’s future needs.
Concerns Over Vinícius Júnior’s Future
Another pressing concern for Pérez is the future of Vinícius Júnior, whose contract is set to expire in 2027. When asked about the possibility of the young talent renewing his deal, Pérez stated:
“I don’t know if he’ll renew. If you ask my opinion, I want him to stay.”
Pérez’s Critique of Riquelme
Continuing his critique, Pérez dismissed Riquelme’s proposed board as being linked to the presidency of Ramón Calderón, which he referred to as “the grimmest period in Real Madrid’s history”. He further declined the opportunity to engage in a public debate with his rival, indicating a preference to communicate directly through media channels instead of a public forum, stating:
“I won’t debate anyone. He can speak as much as he wants. I’ll explain everything here.”
