FIFA Recognizes Afghan Women’s Refugee Football Team

The FIFA Council has officially recognized the Afghan women’s refugee football team, known as Afghan Women United, as eligible for international competitions. This important decision was made during a meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, highlighting a significant step forward for the team that formed out of adversity following the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan five years ago.

While the team will miss the chance to qualify for the upcoming 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, they now have the opportunity to enter the qualification rounds for the 2028 Olympics set to be held in Los Angeles.

FIFA’s Commitment to Support

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed pride in the journey of Afghan Women United and emphasized the necessity of assisting teams that may not have the ability to register as national representatives for FIFA competitions. He stated that the decision reflects a broader initiative by FIFA to uplift these teams in cooperation with the respective confederations.

Background and Advocacy

The quest for FIFA recognition has been ongoing for several years, beginning with the Afghan refugees’ participation in a tournament in Morocco last October, where they faced teams from Chad, Libya, and Tunisia. This milestone event was the result of persistent advocacy led by players, human rights organizations, and former team captain Khalida Popal, who have fought tirelessly for their rights and recognition.

Currently, the team consists of over 80 Afghan women who have found refuge in countries like the United States, Australia, and various European nations. Recently, the players participated in training camps held in England and Australia to prepare for their upcoming matches.

Future Competitions

Under the guidance of coach Pauline Hamill, Afghan Women United is slated to compete in a series of exhibition games during the June international window, with opponents yet to be confirmed. The last competitive game played by the original Afghan women’s team was in 2018, prior to the Taliban’s return to power, which resulted in a crackdown on women’s sports and forced many players to flee the country due to fears of reprisal.

Concerns Surrounding the Afghan Football Federation

In the backdrop, the Afghan Football Federation has been under scrutiny for serious misconduct relating to the women’s program, including allegations of abuse. This ongoing situation casts a shadow over their status, as FIFA has yet to suspend the federation despite the clear violation of anti-discrimination regulations concerning women’s football.
