Evolving from YouTube Star to NASCAR Racer: Cleetus McFarland Takes on Daytona

by February 12, 2026

Garrett Mitchell’s Transition to NASCAR

In Daytona Beach, Florida, Garrett Mitchell, popularly recognized as Cleetus McFarland among his extensive YouTube following, is transitioning into a new role that many fans now acknowledge: that of a NASCAR driver. This shift in perception was highlighted recently when a fan referred to him as a NASCAR driver during dinner, prompting a delighted response from McFarland.

“I’ve been called a YouTuber forever. I was like, ‘Awwwe. That’s sooo much better,'”

he recounted while speaking to the Associated Press.

Upcoming Races and Preparation

McFarland is set to make his highly anticipated debut in the Truck Series at the famed Daytona International Speedway this Friday night, followed by participation in the ARCA Series race the next day. His entry into these competitive circuits is underscored by a year of learning and development from his previous ARCA experiences in 2025, which included some significant setbacks as well as commendable finishes—such as a 10th place at Talladega and 17th at Bristol.

“I feel a little more comfortable now,”

McFarland noted, expressing a newfound familiarity with the venue and the environment, a stark contrast to his experience the prior year where he struggled just to locate his car within the garage area. For this upcoming race, he’s one of 36 contenders in a highly competitive Truck Series event, sharing the track with notable figures including three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart and X Games legend Travis Pastrana, who both add star power to the lineup.

Support and Sponsorship

Stewart, affectionately known as “Smoke”, is also contributing to the revival of Ram’s participation in the Truck Series, a fact that excites McFarland.

“I love Smoke,”

he said, reflecting on his enthusiasm for the opportunity to race alongside such esteemed drivers. Teaming up with Pastrana at Niece Motorsports, McFarland has garnered support from sponsors like Black Rifle Coffee and Brunt Workwear.

Expectations and Tribute

Preparation for this race included receiving NASCAR superspeedway clearance after a recent test session at Rockingham Speedway, which has enabled McFarland to adopt a more confident approach this year compared to the last.

“My expectations are much higher this year,”

he declared, emphasizing a strategic mindset that indicates his growth as a racer.

Pastrana, who has also witnessed McFarland’s evolution, remarked on his teammate’s talents, stating,

“Cleetus always downplays his driving skills, but he’s a wheel man. He can wheel anything.”

In an emotional tribute, both drivers will carry the memory of fellow racer Greg Biffle, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash in December. Their trucks proudly display “Be Like Biff,” a homage to Biffle’s legacy as a prominent figure in NASCAR and his impactful humanitarian actions following Hurricane Helene in 2024. McFarland even playfully cut Pastrana’s shirt sleeves during a media event as part of their tribute.

Reflecting on Biffle’s influence, McFarland stated,

“I wouldn’t be here without Biff. We’re representing. He was going to race ARCA with me this weekend, and that would have been incredible.”

With both races ahead, McFarland is determined to uphold Biffle’s memory while aiming to solidify his new identity as a NASCAR driver.
