Mississippi Judge Grants Quarterback Extended Eligibility
In a significant ruling for college athletics, a judge in Mississippi has granted Trinidad Chambliss, the quarterback for Ole Miss, a preliminary injunction that permits him to extend his eligibility for an additional season. This decision, delivered by Judge Robert Whitwell, came after he criticized the NCAA for not adhering to its own regulations regarding Chambliss’s medical history, which he believed had not been adequately considered during the review process.
Background on Chambliss’s Eligibility
Chambliss’s quest for an extra year began when the NCAA rejected his waiver request on January 9, a decision that was upheld upon appeal by the NCAA’s Athletics Eligibility Subcommittee on February 4. The 23-year-old has faced a challenging college career; he initiated his journey at Ferris State in 2021, redshirting his first year and missing the entire 2022 season due to health issues.
Despite these setbacks, he showcased his talent over two seasons, leading Ferris State to a national championship before making his transfer to Ole Miss.
Performance at Ole Miss
At Ole Miss, Chambliss made a remarkable impact, completing 294 of 445 passes with a 66.1% completion rate, accumulating 3,937 yards alongside 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions this past season. Additionally, he contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 527 yards and scoring eight touchdowns, playing a crucial role in the Rebels’ record-setting season of 13 wins, which included their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Unfortunately, their playoff run concluded in a narrow defeat to Miami, with a final score of 31-27 on January 8, 2023.
