Enrique Riquelme Plans to Appoint Raúl as Sporting Director if Elected President of Real Madrid

Riquelme’s Presidential Bid

Enrique Riquelme, a candidate for the presidency of Real Madrid, has announced his intention to appoint club icon Raúl González Blanco as sporting director if he secures victory in the upcoming election against the long-time president Florentino Pérez. Riquelme, who at 37 is a successful entrepreneur in the renewable energy sector, is seeking to unseat Pérez, 79, who has held the presidency since 2000 with a break from 2006 to 2009. Pérez has faced little opposition in recent elections, winning unchallenged in his last five terms.

Current Challenges for Real Madrid

Currently, Real Madrid has not claimed any major trophies for two consecutive seasons, and under the management of Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, the team has struggled to find success in the 2025-26 season. José Ángel Sánchez, the director general, along with chief scout Juni Calafat, currently fill the decision-making roles in the absence of a designated sporting director.

Riquelme’s Vision for the Club

In an interview with Cadena SER, Riquelme emphasized the importance of having a legendary figure in this role, highlighting Raúl’s impressive career with the club, where he played for 16 seasons and scored over 300 goals. With more than 100 international caps, Riquelme believes Raúl possesses an unparalleled understanding of Real Madrid, making him the ideal candidate to spearhead a new sporting initiative. He stated, “If I become president, Raúl will be my sporting director.”

Raúl’s Legacy and Future Prospects

Raúl, known as a prolific scorer and the third-highest in the club’s history, managed the reserve team Castilla from 2019 until 2025, when he was succeeded by Arbeloa. As for who would take on the role of head coach in Riquelme’s potential administration, he has kept that information under wraps but hinted at future announcements, mentioning that reports suggest José Mourinho might be set to return to the club under a two-year contract.

Campaign Developments

With the election just days away, Riquelme stated, “I aim to unveil names consistently as the campaign progresses, and I will reveal my choice for coach at a later date.” In his campaign, he has also acknowledged the skills of current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, while voicing critical views on Mourinho’s previous tenure at the club, admitting discomfort during certain phases, despite recognizing him as a talented coach.
