Emery criticizes VAR for crucial non-call in Villa’s loss to Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa’s Europa League Semifinal Controversy

In a heated response following Aston Villa’s 1-0 Europa League semifinal defeat to Nottingham Forest, manager Unai Emery has expressed his strong disapproval of the VAR system after a controversial non-call regarding a foul on Ollie Watkins.

Incident Details

The incident occurred near the end of the first half when Forest’s Elliot Anderson appeared to dangerously tackle Watkins, making contact with his ankle. Despite the seriousness of the challenge, no action was taken by either the on-field referee or the VAR officials, which has led Emery to label the decision as “crazy.”

Emery’s Reaction

Emery, who reflected on the match’s officiating in a post-game press conference, claimed he felt initially satisfied with the referee’s performance until the VAR’s handling of the situation came to light.

“I was feeling so comfortable with how he managed the 90 minutes,”

he stated, yet added that seeing the VAR’s response to the incident left him baffled. He emphasized the potential severity of the foul, stating,

“Ollie Watkins was close to breaking his ankle, and the VAR has that responsibility; I can’t understand why they didn’t intervene.”

Support for VAR

The manager, who has voiced his support for VAR in the past, insisted that the technology must be utilized effectively to ensure fairness in matches.

“I support VAR 100%, but it must be managed properly,”

he said.

“An action like that is blatant; there should be no doubt about it. Where was the VAR in this situation? Where was the referee’s judgment? It’s simply crazy.”

Ongoing Debates

Emery’s frustration underscores ongoing debates around the effectiveness of VAR in enhancing the integrity of football, particularly in critical matches such as this semifinal.
