David Fizdale Takes the Helm of Nigeria’s Men’s Basketball Team with an Eye on the 2028 Olympics

David Fizdale Appointed Head Coach of Nigeria’s Men’s Basketball Team

David Fizdale, a former NBA coach, has been appointed as the head coach of Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, with an ambitious goal of qualifying for the 2028 Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles, where he grew up. In an interview with ESPN Andscape, the 51-year-old expressed excitement about returning to a coaching role after stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, where he held a combined head coaching record of 71 wins and 134 losses.

Fizdale’s Coaching Journey

Fizdale, who most recently served as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns until 2025, also works as an analyst for NBA TV. He reflected on his enthusiasm for redefining his role, stating,

“I look forward to calling timeouts and drawing up plays again. It’s going to be thrilling to get back into that rhythm of preparation and motivation. However, what truly drives me is the nostalgia of returning to Los Angeles and the chance to assist Nigeria in not only qualifying for the Olympics but to aim for a medal in front of my family. That would be an incredibly special achievement.”

Nigeria’s Olympic Aspirations

Though Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, known as D’Tigers, has participated in the Olympics three times (2012, 2016, and 2020), they have yet to secure a medal. Mike Brown, the current head coach for the Knicks who previously led D’Tigers during the Tokyo games, was influential in persuading Fizdale to accept the coaching position, along with Ugo Udezue, a board member of the Nigerian Basketball Federation.

Fizdale acknowledged,

“I’m thrilled about this opportunity, and I owe a lot to Mike Brown, who coached the team during memorable victories over the U.S. and Argentina. After our discussions, it became clear that I wanted to take on this challenge of guiding the team to qualify for the Olympics.”

Path to Qualification

The journey to Olympic qualification begins next year, with Nigeria participating in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers in July in Luanda, Angola, where they will face teams such as Angola, Guinea, Tunisia, and Rwanda. To prepare, Fizdale plans to hold a training camp in Luanda.

Should Nigeria succeed in qualifying for either the World Cup in Qatar or the 2028 Olympics, a talented roster may include NBA players like Desmond Bane from the Orlando Magic, OG Anunoby from the Knicks, and others like Onyeka Okongwu and Gabe Vincent, as per sources. There is also the potential for contributions from rising stars such as Stanford freshman Ebuka Okorie, and former NBA players like Jahlil Okafor and Chuma Okeke.

Fizdale’s Personal Connection

Although Fizdale has never personally visited Nigeria or Angola, he has traveled to other African nations, including Senegal and South Africa. He dreams of leading the Nigerian team in front of his hometown crowd in Los Angeles, recalling the 1984 Olympics he watched on television as a boy. He reminisced about hustling on the sidelines, helping friends park cars near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and wishing he could have attended the games.

Reflecting on this unique opportunity, he stated,

“If I manage to get this team to the Olympics, it will be a full circle moment for me. Coaching in the Olympics in my hometown, especially in front of my family, is surely a bucket list accomplishment. We were the kids without the means to attend the Olympic events, but that experience profoundly influenced us.”
