Dallas Mavericks Appoint Mike Schmitz as General Manager Under Masai Ujiri’s Leadership

Dallas Mavericks Appoint Mike Schmitz as General Manager

The Dallas Mavericks have appointed Mike Schmitz, who previously worked as the assistant general manager for the Portland Trail Blazers, to lead their basketball operations department. This announcement, made on Friday, comes as the team looks to revitalize itself under the leadership of recently appointed president, Masai Ujiri.

Mike Schmitz’s Background and Responsibilities

Schmitz has a solid track record, having joined the Blazers’ management team in May 2022 after a successful tenure as an ESPN draft analyst since 2017. In his new position as general manager for the Mavericks, he is expected to oversee comprehensive aspects of basketball operations, which include scouting players, managing personnel, strategic planning, and enhancing collaboration across various organizational departments.

Masai Ujiri’s Vision

Ujiri, who recently transitioned to Dallas from his prestigious role with the Toronto Raptors, expressed his enthusiasm for Schmitz’s hiring, citing the latter’s impressive reputation as a basketball evaluator and his essential qualities like intelligence, humility, and an unwavering work ethic.

“He understands the importance of fostering a cohesive culture in a basketball organization, and I believe he will be instrumental in our plans to create something exceptional in Dallas,”

Ujiri noted in his statement.

Transition and Future Prospects

The Mavericks have been in a state of transition since the dismissal of former general manager Nico Harrison on November 11, a decision that followed a disappointing start to the season, exemplified by a 3-8 record. This shakeup came amidst significant fan discontent related to the controversial trade of star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier in February 2025, just months after the team reached the NBA Finals in 2024.

Inheriting a team that is expected to secure a high lottery draft pick next month, Schmitz is poised to guide the Mavericks in a new direction, especially after the franchise’s selection of Cooper Flagg, the reigning Rookie of the Year, with the first overall pick the previous year.

Schmitz’s Commitment

Reflecting on his new role, Schmitz remarked,

“Being part of the Dallas Mavericks presents a phenomenal opportunity. I have great admiration for Masai and the ownership group’s vision for this franchise’s future. I am eager to collaborate with the talented individuals already here and contribute to constructing a championship-level organization.”
