Washington Spirit vs. Seattle Reign FC
In a tightly contested match on Sunday, the Washington Spirit edged out the Seattle Reign FC with a narrow 1-0 victory, but the game saw a concerning moment for key player Trinity Rodman.
Trinity Rodman’s Injury
The forward, who is currently the highest-paid player in the NWSL, was substituted in the 56th minute after sustaining an ankle injury following a collision in front of the goal during a corner kick. Rodman fell to the ground clutching her right ankle, prompting immediate attention from the Spirit’s medical team.
Despite the injury scare, Rodman attempted to continue playing but was eventually replaced by Lucia Di Guglielmo as the game was still locked at 0-0. Remarkably, she was able to walk off the pitch unaided and was later spotted on the sidelines chatting and smiling with her teammates, indicating that the injury may not be severe.
Rodman’s Injury History
Rodman’s season has been plagued with injury troubles, including a serious back issue at the conclusion of the 2024 season which carried over into the 2025 season. Additionally, she encountered a strained MCL late last season, which hampered her performance in the playoffs, leading to a disappointing defeat against Gotham FC in the championship match.
After a period of recovery, she made her return to the national team in January and participated in the SheBelieves Cup in March, although she experienced another back scare that fortunately did not result in further injury.
Match Highlights
In the game, Claudia Martinez scored a crucial late goal that secured the win for Washington, marking their fifth consecutive victory.
With this win, the Spirit now find themselves sitting in second place in the league standings with 18 points, just one point adrift of the league-leading Portland Thorns. As the season progresses, Rodman’s performance remains vital; she has netted three goals in nine matches thus far.
