Chris Billam-Smith on the Road to the Top: Aiming for Jai Opetaia and Beyond with Zuffa Boxing

Boxing Aspirations and Zuffa’s Challenge

In the realm of boxing, aspiring champions often dream of securing prestigious titles from notable governing bodies such as the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF. However, this aspirational narrative seems distant for fighters associated with Zuffa Boxing, a fresh entrant in the boxing scene this year aiming to develop a championship belt that lacks the allure traditionally coveted by boxers.

Chris Billam-Smith’s Perspective

Chris Billam-Smith, a former WBO cruiserweight champion and the star of Zuffa Boxing’s inaugural international event this Saturday, offers a nuanced perspective. With a professional record of 21 victories and 2 losses, including 13 knockouts, the English boxer is scheduled to fight against hard-hitting contender Ryan Rozicki as part of Zuffa Boxing 7, returning to his hometown of Bournemouth after achieving success in various high-profile venues, including soccer stadiums and an impressive bout in Riyadh against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.

For Billam-Smith, the focus transcends traditional titles; his ambition is to solidify his status as the premier cruiserweight globally. According to Billam-Smith, the defining match is against Jai Opetaia, an undefeated New Zealander whose reputation as a top-tier opponent played a significant role in his decision to join Zuffa.

“My priority is to demonstrate that I am the best in the world, and when I commenced my journey with Zuffa, Jai Opetaia was the benchmark,”

he articulated in an interview with Uncrowned.

Upcoming Challenges

Before embarking on a potential showdown with Opetaia, who currently stands as a leading figure in the cruiserweight realm, Billam-Smith must first tackle the challenge posed by Rozicki (21-1-1, with 20 KOs) at the Bournemouth International Centre, where he seeks to reaffirm his elite status in the 200-pound weight class, which has recently witnessed significant transformations.

Highlighting Rozicki’s experience, Billam-Smith emphasized a considerable disparity in skill and experience:

“When you examine our recent opponents, the difference in class is notable. I believe I am the superior all-round boxer. I possess the ability to strategize, box, and fight effectively. My experience and proficiency give me an edge.”

Billam-Smith and Rozicki share the same number of professional bouts at 23 each. However, a pivotal moment in Billam-Smith’s career occurred in 2019 when he traveled to Riga, Latvia, to train and spar with Mairis Briedis, a three-time cruiserweight world champion. That experience was crucial for his development, providing insight into the level to strive towards.

“At that time, I had only engaged in 11 fights, but sparring with him showcased the level I aspired to reach, reinforcing my confidence in my potential,”

Billam-Smith remarked.

Current Landscape of the Cruiserweight Division

Since that pivotal experience, the 35-year-old boxer has only tasted defeat once—against Ramirez in a title unification contest—with many of his subsequent matches leading to victories over notable contenders such as Isaac Chamberlain and Lawrence Okolie.

Recently, the cruiserweight division has experienced additional upheaval with David Benavidez‘s dominant performance over Ramirez, prompting discussions regarding which fighters will stay and compete for titles and which will step back to lower weight divisions. The uncertainties surrounding Benavidez’s plans have only added complexity to the championship picture.

Billam-Smith recognizes the challenges posed by boxing’s organizational politics, which may hinder the opportunity for marquee matchups. He maintains that the drive for competition should always prioritize high-caliber fighters holding prestigious titles.

“In essence, I don’t see the point of a rivalry; the goal should always be to have the best hold championship belts. It doesn’t matter whether he holds the traditional sanctioning body belts or a Zuffa belt; the public will perceive Opetaia as the best in the division. Hence, this contest is crucial for both our legacies,”

he stated confidently.

Looking Ahead

Ultimately, Billam-Smith’s aspirations to face Opetaia hinge on his ability to secure a decisive victory against Rozicki this Saturday. He expressed his belief in the possibility of achieving a knockout, signaling readiness for a showdown with one of the cruiserweight division’s finest.

“I am fully confident in my ability to halt him, and it could manifest at any point during the fight. It’s all about how he reacts to my shots and my quickness,”

Billam-Smith concluded, brimming with anticipation for the upcoming match.
