Authorities in Argentina have detained two individuals from Chile believed to be involved in a transnational criminal syndicate responsible for burglarizing the homes of high-profile athletes, including notable figures from the NBA and NFL. The Argentine Federal Police made the announcement on Monday, stating that the arrests occurred at the Retiro bus terminal in Buenos Aires.
Details of the Suspects
The detained suspects are identified as Ignacio Zuniga Cartes and Bastian Jimenez Freraut. They are accused of being part of a network that has targeted the residences of well-known American and Argentine sports personalities, including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, as well as former tennis champion Juan Martin del Potro. Recent reports from ABC News indicated that these individuals were apprehended in connection with a burglary that took place at del Potro’s home earlier this month.
Also arrested was a third individual, Pablo Zuniga Cartes, who is sought in relation to the burglaries across the United States. However, his arrest was not linked to the incident involving del Potro. According to ABC News, this action was the result of a collaborative effort between Argentine and Chilean law enforcement officials, and the suspects are currently in Chile awaiting extradition to the United States, where they face charges.

Among the other athletes affected by these burglaries are Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Milwaukee Bucks player Bobby Portis. In response to the string of break-ins, the NFL issued a security advisory to teams and the players’ union in early 2024 after incidents involving Mahomes and Kelce.

The FBI has reported that organized crime syndicates from South America are employing public information and social media to monitor the movements of athletes, using advanced technology to circumvent security systems and disable alarm mechanisms, as well as to compromise surveillance gear and disguise their identities during the criminal acts. Precious items, substantial amounts of cash, trophies, and medals have been stolen while the athletes were traveling.
Legal Proceedings
In February 2025, a federal court in Florida charged seven Chileans with conspiracy to transport stolen goods across state lines, a serious offense that could result in up to ten years incarceration. Among those arrested in Argentina are included in this group of accused individuals. Additionally, Alexander Esteban Huaiquil Chavez, another individual named in the indictment, has already pleaded guilty to related charges in a federal court in Tennessee, with sentencing set for June 11. The indictments also include three other men who were apprehended last year for their roles in the targeted burglary of Burrow’s home in Ohio, and their upcoming legal proceedings in the Southern District of Ohio are scheduled for July 8.
