Canada’s World Cup Squad Announcement
On Friday evening, Alphonso Davies was officially included in Canada’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite uncertainty surrounding his fitness for the opening match due to a hamstring issue. The talented defender, who currently plays for Bayern Munich, sustained this injury during a Champions League semifinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the month.
As the team’s captain and one of its standout athletes, Davies joins a roster that also features key players such as Jonathan David of Juventus, Cyle Larin from Southampton, and Tajon Buchanan of Villarreal.
Coach’s Lineup and Preparation
Coach Jesse Marsch announced a 26-player lineup, which includes nine defenders, ten midfielders, four forwards, and three goalkeepers, in preparation for the tournament kicking off on June 11. Earlier this week, he had listed Davies among a wider 32-player training camp roster, yet the player opted to remain in Germany for rehabilitation rather than joining the team in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they have been practicing before friendly matches against Uzbekistan and Ireland.
Significance of the World Cup for Canada
The upcoming World Cup is particularly significant for Canada as the nation is co-hosting the event alongside the United States and Mexico. Canada is drawn into Group B, competing against Switzerland, Qatar, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the latter of which famously ousted Italy in the European playoffs. The Canadian squad will play all three of their group matches at home, starting with their opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto.
Having previously participated in the World Cup in 1986 and 2022 without advancing beyond the group stage, this event represents a new opportunity for the team, especially after Davies scored Canada’s inaugural World Cup goal in their 4-1 loss to Croatia four years ago.
Injury Updates and Goalkeeper Decision
Several players are also returning from injuries, including forward Promise David, who underwent hip surgery for a ruptured tendon in February, and defender Moïse Bombito, sidelined since breaking his leg in a match against Monaco. Midfielder Jacob Shaffelburg has also been included, although he is recovering from a hamstring injury.
As for Canada’s goalkeepers, a starter has yet to be determined between Maxime Crépeau and Dayne St. Clair, both of whom will participate in the upcoming friendlies before a final decision is made. In a Canadian television broadcast discussing the squad, Crépeau emphasized the supportive environment among the players, stating:
“We know what’s coming in terms of a decision and we’re both mature enough to understand our role for the team, whatever the decision is.”
