Konsta Helenius: A Rising Star in Hockey
Konsta Helenius is solidifying his reputation as a rising star in the hockey world, as he garners more accolades. The Buffalo Sabres’ promising young center is only 20 years old but has already made notable contributions to the team, playing nine games in the regular season and demonstrating skill during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. His recent triumph includes scoring the decisive goal for Finland at the IIHF World Championships held last month in Switzerland.
Recognition and Achievements
On Wednesday, the American Hockey League recognized his talent by naming him to their 2025-26 Top Prospects Team, marking a second consecutive year of excellence. Helenius had previously received the same honor after concluding his rookie season in North America with 35 points—comprised of 14 goals and 21 assists—across 65 matches with the Rochester Americans. This past season, he eclipsed his previous performance, accumulating 62 points (21 goals and 41 assists) in just 63 games with the Amerks, placing him in a tie for ninth in the AHL’s overall scoring. Additionally, he set a franchise record for points scored by a teenager.
Draft and Future Prospects
The Sabres’ luck at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas proved beneficial; they managed to trade down three spots while acquiring an extra second-round pick, which ultimately led to securing Helenius. Analysts had identified him as one of the most ready-to-play forwards available, alongside first overall pick Macklin Celebrini, thanks to his extensive experience in Finnish hockey, including participation in the Under-18, World Junior Championships, and the senior World Championships.
Looking Ahead
With the expectation that Helenius will transition away from the AHL soon, especially in light of possible departures from the roster such as Alex Tuch and Beck Malenstyn due to free agency, the Sabres are likely to lean on upcoming talents like Helenius, alongside Jiri Kulich and Noah Ostlund, to fill gaps in the lineup. Despite the potential for trades in a competitive market this summer, moving Helenius seems unlikely given his capability to make an impact in the NHL at such a young age.
This season’s performance has established him not only as a fixture in the Sabres organization but also as a player to watch in the future.
