Cameron Norrie Prepares for Showdown with Jannik Sinner
Cameron Norrie is gearing up for his inaugural showdown with Jannik Sinner following his progression to the fourth round of the Madrid Open. Despite having competed against top players like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic numerous times, Norrie has somehow never faced the current World No. 1 Sinner until now. This intriguing matchup is scheduled to take place at the Caja Magica on Tuesday, where Norrie will attempt to end Sinner’s impressive 19-match winning streak and reach the quarter-finals in Madrid for the first time in his career.
“It’s surprising to think I haven’t played him yet,” Norrie remarked during an interview with Sky Sports. “I’m looking forward to it, even though in practice sessions he usually gets the better of me. He’s incredibly confident right now, likely the most self-assured player on the tour. My strategy will be to stick to my game plan and focus on each point as it comes.”
Recent Matches and Performance
In the second round, Norrie faced a nearly three-hour duel against Tomas Machac before overcoming the challenge presented by Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante, securing a straight-sets victory with scores of 7-5, 7-6(5).
“It was a challenging match,” reflected Norrie after the match on the third court of Caja Magica. “I hadn’t had the chance to practice on the stadium courts, so returning there felt rather different. I struggled a bit with the ball’s bounce. His serve was incredibly powerful, especially his first serve which clocked in as a rocket. However, I managed to find my game and perform well during the crucial moments, which made the difference.”
Throughout the match, opportunities were limited, but Norrie capitalized on his third chance to break in a tightly contested opening set with a precise backhand. He then wrapped up the match by clinching his initial match point in a tense second-set tie-break, despite Tirante boasting a formidable serve measured at 149 miles per hour in the sixth game, which failed to yield any break points against Norrie’s serve.
