BOXXER Files Lawsuit Against Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing Over Alleged Breach of Fighter Contracts in UK

Legal Proceedings Against Zuffa Boxing

In a significant development ahead of Zuffa Boxing’s inaugural event in the UK, another promotion, BOXXER, has launched legal proceedings against it. The action concerns the purported illicit recruitment of two fighters, Chris Billam-Smith and Sam Hickey, by Dana White’s newest boxing venture. These athletes are slated to make their first appearances for Zuffa Boxing this Saturday in Bournemouth, England. BOXXER, led by Ben Shalom, asserts that they had existing contracts with both fighters that were violated.

Details of the Lawsuit

According to the lawsuit, BOXXER is seeking court-ordered injunctive relief to prevent Zuffa Boxing and its broadcast partner, Sky Sports — which is showcasing the upcoming fight card — from operating freely until the situation is resolved. The legal dispute stems from a four-year broadcasting agreement that BOXXER had with Sky Sports, which commenced in 2021 and is set to remain valid until June 2025. Sky Sports opted not to extend this contract and instead chose new agreements with Zuffa Boxing as well as Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.

Contentious Fighter Agreements

The situation with Billam-Smith is particularly contentious; he claims his agreement with BOXXER is active until the conclusion of 2025. However, BOXXER counters that he was in an exclusive negotiating phase and that they held the right to match any offers made to him. Meanwhile, concerning Hickey, BOXXER alleges that the young Scottish middleweight was under a long-term contract when he announced his commitment to Zuffa Boxing back in May.

Additional Legal Conflicts

While neither Jack Massey nor his fight against Cheavon Clarke is part of the current lawsuit, BOXXER expresses intentions to argue that Massey also has outstanding contractual obligations with them.

In addition to this case, BOXXER is embroiled in another legal conflict involving its former boxing chief, Josh Wischussen, accused of sabotaging BOXXER’s negotiations with Sky Sports and consulting with a rival organization while still affiliated with BOXXER. Recently, news emerged that both Sky Sports and emerging promoter Shaa Wassmund have been included as co-defendants in this ongoing litigation. Wassmund is alleged to have played a role in facilitating Zuffa Boxing’s contract with Sky and is being accused of complicity in Wischussen’s purported misconduct, which pertains to interference with various fighter contracts and agreements within BOXXER’s organization.
