Anthony Edwards’ status uncertain as Timberwolves gear up for Game 1 against Spurs

Minnesota Timberwolves Update

In a significant update for the Minnesota Timberwolves ahead of their playoff series, star guard Anthony Edwards has been designated as questionable for the opening game against the San Antonio Spurs, scheduled for Monday night. This development comes after Edwards experienced a bone bruise during a hyperextension of his left knee in Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets.

Edwards’ Rehabilitation Progress

During the weekend, Edwards participated in some light court activities and joined his teammates on the trip to San Antonio, receiving clearance for basketball-related workouts ahead of the team’s shootaround on Monday morning. Team insiders shared with ESPN’s Shams Charania that there is increased hope for Edwards’ earlier return than previously anticipated, originally thought to be around Games 3 or 4 of the upcoming series.

Despite some setbacks, including chronic inflammation in his right knee that he has managed for the past month, Edwards has been proactive in his rehabilitation, especially with the sense of urgency that the playoffs bring. He even shared a video on his YouTube channel Sunday morning demonstrating his progress, featuring clips of him exercising on an underwater treadmill and an interview with David Hines, the Timberwolves’ vice president of medical performance. Hines noted that the recovery timeline could range from one to two weeks.

Injury Details and Team Performance

Edwards’ injury occurred on April 25 during a defensive play, and the upcoming Game 1 takes place nine days post-injury. The fourth game of the series, should it be necessary, would come 15 days after the hyperextension. In the shared video, Hines discussed the importance of pain management, mobility, and functional strength in determining Edwards’ return.

In the previous round, the Timberwolves achieved a notable victory, clinching the series against the Nuggets without their star, winning Game 6 on their home court. Minnesota faces a tough challenge as they enter their second-round matchup against the Spurs, who dominated the regular season with 62 wins. Additionally, the team also reported that reserve guard Ayo Dosunmu is questionable for the series opener due to soreness in his right calf.
