In a heartwarming display of resilience, Anastasia Potapova found herself overwhelmed with emotion after clinching a remarkable victory at the Madrid Open. The 56th-ranked Russian player, who was originally eliminated in the qualifying rounds, triumphed over former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova with scores of 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3, securing her spot in the semifinals as a ‘lucky loser’—a designation for players who enter the main draw after another competitor withdraws. This achievement marks a historic moment as Potapova becomes the first of her kind to reach the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event since the tournament format began in 1990.
Overcoming Challenges
After almost surrendering her lead—she missed three match points during the intense second set and found herself trailing 3-1 in the decisive third—Potapova’s persistence paid off.
“I had some match points in the second set, but my nerves got the better of me,”
she admitted, emphasizing the thrill of being granted second chances throughout the tournament.
Her mental fortitude received a significant boost when her boyfriend, Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor, arrived just in time to support her. Potapova candidly shared that she had momentarily lost her self-belief during the match.
“Big respect to my boyfriend who came just on time. He kept encouraging me, telling me to believe in myself and keep pushing forward,”
she reflected. Despite the pressure of the match, she attributed her success in part to his steady presence, saying,
“He did it mentally, and I did it physically.”

Next up for Potapova is a match against Marta Kostyuk, who defeated Linda Noskova in the quarterfinals with a convincing score of 7-6 (1), 6-0. This victory adds to Potapova’s impressive momentum; she previously took down world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the round of 16.

“I was not anticipating reentry into the draw. I was only notified about my chance just half an hour before my first round match,”
she recounted, highlighting the unpredictability and excitement of the tournament.

“Perhaps the key is to not always be so focused and instead relish the moment,”
she suggested. Now reflecting on her incredible progress, she expressed gratitude, saying,
“It feels almost miraculous to have come this far, and I truly believe if you receive a second chance, maybe it’s meant to be. I’m grateful to have made the most of my opportunity and to be where I am now.”
