Alphonso Davies Returns to Canadian National Team
Alphonso Davies has been welcomed back into the Canadian national team as they gear up for the upcoming World Cup, even though he remains sidelined due to injury. The talented left back sustained a hamstring injury last month during a match against Paris Saint-Germain, resulting in Bayern Munich’s elimination from the Champions League semifinals due to the 1-1 tie.
Warm-Up Match and Team Spirit
On Monday, during a rainy warm-up match held in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada secured a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan. Despite being unable to play, Davies was seen jogging around the pitch prior to the match.
“It’s great to be back out on the field and doing some running. I’m thrilled to be home and with my teammates, providing support both on and off the field,”
he expressed after joining the squad on Sunday.
World Cup Roster and Rehabilitation
Davies, who has a record of 15 goals in 58 appearances for Canada, was included in the 26-player roster announced on Friday for this year’s World Cup. He refrained from making predictions about his return to action but emphasized the importance of his rehabilitation.
“We’ll have to see how the next few days unfold. I will keep focusing on my rehab, taking things step by step and assessing how I feel each day,”
he noted.
Overcoming Challenges
His last appearance for Canada was back in March 2025 when he endured a torn ACL during the CONCACAF Nations League finals. Reflecting on the challenges he has faced over the past year, he shared,
“It’s been a rollercoaster. I had to manage not only the ACL injury but also several minor muscle injuries along the way. Despite these challenges, I am committed to staying focused and continuing to work hard. It’s certainly been tough both mentally and physically, but I feel positive about my recovery now and aim to heal as swiftly as possible.”
Coach’s Support and Caution
Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch reassured that there should be no rush for Davies to come back too soon.
“We want to ensure he doesn’t find himself in a position where he risks further injury. It’s crucial for him to rebuild trust in his body so he can return to playing the sport he loves without apprehension. We will be diligent in monitoring his progress daily and supporting him in reaching his full potential,”
Marsch stated emphatically.
