Zhilei Zhang Aims for Heavyweight Glory: Retirement is Not on the Horizon

Zhilei Zhang Dismisses Retirement Rumors

Zhilei Zhang, the renowned Chinese heavyweight boxer, has dismissed any rumors regarding his retirement as he aims for one last attempt at the championship title. The 42-year-old fighter is particularly eager to initiate this final push with a long-awaited bout against Anthony Joshua. In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Zhang expressed that age does not define his capabilities within the ring.

“Reaching 42 does not signify an end for me; rather, it’s the start of a new phase in my career,” Zhang stated.

He reflected on his recent fight against Agit Kabayel, asserting his readiness to continue competing at an elite level.

“I have faced tough opponents consistently without cherry-picking fights; many of my recent adversaries have been younger, yet I remain a formidable competitor.”

Turning professional at 31, Zhang entered boxing later than many of his peers, yet with a record of 27 wins, 3 losses, and a draw—22 of those victories by knockout—he remains passionate about his sport.

“Typically, boxers in China start to retire around my age, but I feel my age is merely a number, and my physical condition is excellent,” he added.

Zhang explained that he has never entertained thoughts of retirement. Instead, he believes that he will know it is time to step away only when his body no longer supports him in the ring.

After undergoing elbow surgery and completing his rehabilitation following his recent defeat, Zhang is keen to return to action by the end of the year, with Joshua currently at the forefront of his aspirations.

“I aim to fight before 2023 concludes. If Joshua wants to step into the ring with me, I’m ready, no matter where it may take place,” he declared.

The boxer noted that despite numerous discussions over the years, a match with Joshua has yet to materialize.

“I hope we can finally make this long-awaited fight happen,” he said.

Zhang remains steadfast in his pursuit of boxing greatness, expressing that the ultimate goal of becoming a world champion is still within reach.

“My dream is still alive, and I am determined to achieve it—just one more step remains, but I recognize the challenges ahead.”
