Zdeno Chara returns to Bruins as hockey operations advisor

Zdeno Chara Returns to the Boston Bruins

Zdeno Chara, the former captain of the Boston Bruins, has officially returned to the franchise where he led the team to a Stanley Cup championship over a decade ago. On Thursday, the Bruins announced that Chara would serve as a hockey operations advisor, a role expected to involve significant interaction with players and organizational staff. This position is aimed at fostering key relationships and enhancing communication between the coaching staff and the players.

Chara’s Role and Responsibilities

Chara’s duties will include attending team practices and home games, as well as offering support for defensemen in their off-ice development. In addition, he will make occasional trips to the Bruins’ AHL affiliate, where he will work with emerging prospects.

General Manager’s Enthusiasm

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney expressed enthusiasm about Chara’s return, underlining the wealth of experience and leadership qualities he brings to the team, stating that Chara is recognized as one of the all-time greats in the NHL. Chara’s illustrious career began with the New York Islanders, followed by stints at the Ottawa Senators, before making his mark with the Bruins starting in the 2006-07 season as their captain.

Chara’s Career Highlights

During his impressive 14-season run with Boston, Chara not only played over 1,000 games but also lifted the Stanley Cup in 2011, marking the franchise’s first championship win since 1972. He is a six-time NHL All-Star and received the Norris Trophy in 2009, awarded to the league’s top defenseman. Furthermore, 2023 has been a remarkable year for Chara as he was inducted into both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Reconnecting with History

Chara’s return to the Bruins is part of a broader strategy by the team to reconnect with its history, as they also appointed former forward Marco Sturm as the new head coach in response to a disappointing season that saw the team tied for the fourth-worst record in the NHL. Sturm, who played alongside Chara during his tenure in Boston, expressed excitement about Chara’s presence in the organization, emphasizing that his vast knowledge of the sport will be invaluable for current players and staff alike.
