Yulia Putintseva Voices Safety Concerns Over Spectator at Wimbledon

Incident at Wimbledon

During her first-round match at Wimbledon, the world’s 33rd ranked player Yulia Putintseva raised alarm over a spectator whose behavior she deemed threatening. The incident occurred early in her encounter with Amanda Anisimova on court 15, leading the 30-year-old Kazakh player to express her concerns directly to the umpire.

Concerns Raised

Putintseva characterized the individual in question as ‘crazy’ and ‘dangerous’, prompting her to request their removal from the stands.

“Can you take him out? I am not going to continue playing until he leaves. These people are dangerous, they are crazy,”

she stated while pointing out the spectator, whom she identified by their green clothing.

Response from Officials

In response, the chair umpire engaged with security personnel on the matter. However, when informed that they could resume play, Putintseva reiterated her discomfort, insisting on action before continuing.

“Take him out, because maybe he has a knife,”

she expressed, revealing her heightened anxiety.

Match Outcome

The incident overshadowed her performance, as she ultimately lost the match in a swift 45 minutes with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Afterward, she chose not to comment to the media.

Official Statements

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) confirmed that the situation was promptly addressed, stating,

“Following a complaint about the behavior of a spectator at the match on court 15, the chair umpire informed security and the matter was dealt with.”

Anisimova also provided her perspective, noting that the spectator appeared to be voicing comments as Putintseva prepared to serve, yet she was confident in the security measures in place. AELTC’s chief executive, Sally Bolton, emphasized the organization’s commitment to player safety, reiterating their expertise in implementing necessary security protocols to ensure a safe playing environment.
