On June 29, in a showcase of athletic talent at the Mitchell Tennis Classic, held at Mitchell Middle School, eighth-grader Patrick Morgan emerged as a standout participant, achieving the remarkable feat of securing two championships during the event. Originally scheduled for June 21-22, the tournament was postponed due to oppressive heat conditions.
Tournament Overview
In total, the tournament attracted 38 competitors, with 31 hailing from Mitchell. The structure of the event included various brackets for both singles and doubles matches. The championship rounds featured champions crowned across five singles categories, three doubles divisions, and a mixed doubles competition.
Patrick Morgan’s Achievements
Morgan’s journey began on Saturday, where he first triumphed in the French Open singles division. He began his campaign with a decisive 10-4 win against Charlie Patzer and followed up with a semifinal victory over Baylee Callahan, winning 10-5. The championship match was a nail-biter, where Morgan faced Jakobi Brink, clinching the title through a tiebreaker with a score of 10-9(8).
Continuing his impressive performance, Morgan partnered with Stratton Zens to claim the Davis Cup doubles title on Sunday. The duo finished the round-robin format with a spotless 3-0 record. Their ultimate victory came against Jacob Delehant and Mitchell Crothers, where they secured the championship with a tight 10-7 win in the final.
Other Notable Performances
Alongside Morgan’s achievements, several other athletes showcased their skills as well. Matthew Mauszycki claimed the U.S. Open title, narrowly overcoming both Shane Callahan in the semifinals (10-9(3)) and Sutton Thompson in a tense final match (10-9(8)), with his journey beginning with a victory over Matteah Graves.
In the Miami Open division, Alex Mattke recorded a dominant performance, easily dispatching Kloe Rockwell (10-0) and Owen Holstein (10-3) on his way to the championship. However, he faced a tough challenge in the final against Gavin Meyer, ultimately winning 10-6.
Brooke Steidl secured the Cincinnati Open title with a flawless 3-0 record, defeating Gabbie Thompson in the second round with a score of 10-6. Similarly, Macy Zens excelled in the Laver Cup division, finishing with a perfect record, highlighted by a 10-3 victory over Addison Brenden.
In doubles action, Thompson and Dawson Adams clinched the Australian Open division title, wrapping up their run with a close 10-8 victory against Dayton Adams and Simon Wiese.
