Young American Tien Makes History by Reaching Australian Open Quarterfinals

Historic Achievement at the Australian Open

In a remarkable achievement at the Australian Open, 20-year-old learner Tien has made history as the youngest male player to advance to the quarterfinals in 11 years. He is also the youngest American male to reach this stage in a Grand Slam since 2002.

Victory Over Daniil Medvedev

Tien secured his spot in the last eight with a commanding victory over Daniil Medvedev, winning in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-0, 6-3. This victory is notable as it comes exactly one year after Tien produced an unexpected upset against the 2021 U.S. Open champion in the second round.

Surpassing Previous Achievements

Tien’s journey through the Australian Open has already surpassed his previous run last year, where he was eliminated in the fourth round. By advancing to this stage, he has become the first player to achieve this feat since Nick Kyrgios in 2015 and the youngest American since Andy Roddick’s performance at the 2002 U.S. Open.

Next Challenge: Alexander Zverev

In his next match, Tien is set to face No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, who finished his previous match against Francisco Cerundolo with a straight-sets victory of 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, marking his first such win of the tournament. Despite a brief medical timeout during his match for a nose issue, which caused a seven-minute delay, Tien showcased resilience and determination.

Expressions of Joy and Anticipation

“It feels amazing to achieve this, especially here in Australia. This has been a significant goal for me this year, and I’m overjoyed,” Tien expressed, highlighting the overwhelming support he received from fans, some of whom sported yellow signs known as L Plates to represent learner drivers—a tribute to his status as a young talent.

Looking Ahead

“It’s going to be a super tough match. I managed to beat him once, but the second time he dominated me. He is a fantastic player, especially here, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead,” Tien noted, aware of the challenge posed by Zverev.
