Ottawa Senators Rookie Camp Highlights
As the Ottawa Senators wrap up their rookie camp, anticipation builds for their match against the Winnipeg Jets this evening. Among the noteworthy prospects, defenseman Carter Yakemchuk and forward Stephen Halliday have shown promising talent, contributing a combined five points in a close 4–3 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs’ rookies yesterday.
Standout Player: Xavier Bourgault
However, the standout player at this year’s camp has emerged as winger Xavier Bourgault, a point acknowledged by Belleville Senators head coach David Bell. Shortly after the camp commenced, Bell highlighted Bourgault’s impressive performance, stating:
“He’s been really good since the start of camp. I think he put a lot of work in this summer. He’s finally healthy, he’s stronger, and he’s probably been the best player at camp for this group so far. He’s been really strong this year.”
Bourgault, at 22 years old, possesses a competitive edge, having participated in past rookie camps. His first-round selection by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2021 NHL Draft underscores his potential. Following a stellar junior season in which he recorded 75 points in just 43 games with Shawinigan, Bourgault transitioned into professional hockey, spending two years in the AHL before being traded last summer in a deal that included Jake Chiasson and brought winger Roby Jarventie to Ottawa.
General Manager’s Insight
General Manager Steve Staios holds a solid understanding of Bourgault, having worked with him during his inaugural pro season with the Oilers and witnessing Bourgault’s skills firsthand when his Hamilton Bulldogs faced the Cataractes at the 2022 Memorial Cup, where Bourgault notably ranked fourth in scoring.
Last season was challenging for Bourgault, as injury setbacks limited his performance, resulting in only 26 points over 61 games with Belleville. Bell explained:
“I think part of it last year, which is what he struggled with, was that he was hurt. He had a hip flexor that was sore. He had a wrist that was sore. He was handcuffed quite a bit. Now he’s healthy, and you’re seeing a little bit more of what he was in junior — a dynamic, game-breaking type of player.”
Expressing confidence in Bourgault’s abilities, Staios re-signed him to a one-year contract this offseason. Although the Senators’ roster appears largely finalized ahead of the season opener, Bell believes Bourgault’s growing confidence could influence decisions regarding the team’s lineup. Bell remarked:
“If he can keep going with that in these games, and then have a good start to the season, he’ll get some consideration.”
As the Senators look to finalize their roster, Bourgault’s performance will be a key focal point during tonight’s game against the Jets, showcasing just how far he has come since last season and what he might bring to Ottawa in the coming year.
