Xabi Alonso urges Vinícius and Mbappé to step up defensive efforts for Real Madrid

Real Madrid Prepares for Club World Cup Showdown

In advance of Real Madrid’s crucial match against Salzburg in the Club World Cup set for Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, coach Xabi Alonso has urged star players Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé to enhance their contributions when the team is without possession.

Current Standing in the Tournament

Currently, Madrid sits in a favorable position to advance to the knockout stage after gathering four points from their initial two group matches, which included a 1-1 tie against Al Hilal and a 3-1 victory over Pachuca.

Emphasis on Defensive Contributions

Alonso pointed out that both Vinícius and Mbappé faced criticism last season regarding their off-the-ball efforts, particularly under the guidance of former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

“We all need to defend; all eleven players on the pitch must participate,”

Alonso remarked during a news conference. He emphasized the importance of collective pressure, highlighting the need for players including Vinícius, Jude Bellingham, Fede Valverde, and Mbappé to understand their roles in pressing opponents.

He added,

“The defense must maintain a higher line and the closer we are together, the better we perform. We are focused on improving this aspect, including Vinícius.”

International Competition Insights

Reflecting on the tournament’s quality, Alonso acknowledged the strong performances of South American teams against European sides, stating that it showcases the global level of football competition.

“It’s beneficial for European teams to recognize the caliber of soccer being played outside of Europe. We’re witnessing talented squads that don’t often get the spotlight, like River Plate and the Brazilian teams,”

he shared, referencing the upcoming matchups that include illustrious clubs from South America.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Madrid, by topping Group H, could potentially contend with Manchester City in the knockout rounds, a rematch from last season’s Champions League. However, Alonso dismissed the notion of allowing future matches to distract from their immediate objective against Salzburg.

“It’s not prudent to think about anything other than winning this match,”

Alonso stated firmly.

“A clear goal must guide us; I’m aware of the possible draw, but we will play with the intent to win.”

Team Updates

In team updates, forward Rodrygo, who did not see any action during the match against Pachuca, has been the subject of transfer talks. Nonetheless, Alonso expressed confidence in Rodrygo, commending his enthusiastic demeanor.

“He seems to be in good spirits. His omission from the last match was purely a tactical choice, but he remains a key player for us, and I foresee him playing a significant role in the Club World Cup,”

Alonso remarked.
