Xabi Alonso: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Training Boosts Real Madrid’s Right-Back Options

Press Conference Highlights

In a recent press conference, Xabi Alonso, the current head coach of Real Madrid, expressed optimism regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s improved fitness following the international break. Alonso highlighted the hard work Alexander-Arnold has put into training, which he believes will enhance the team’s options in the right-back position.

Alexander-Arnold’s Fitness and Team Dynamics

Despite a difficult start to his debut season in LaLiga, where he has been hampered by injuries, the English player is now regarded as being in better shape. Recently, he was left out of the England squad by coach Thomas Tuchel, and has seen minimal playing time, featuring just nine minutes in Madrid’s narrow 1-0 loss against Liverpool on November 4, where he faced a hostile reception from the Anfield crowd, and only seven minutes in a goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano shortly after.

“During this international break, we focused on both collective and individual training with Trent, taking into account his recent injuries. His improved condition will provide us more flexibility in that position, alongside other players we have. Fede Valverde is still available, and we also have Eder Militao, who recently played as a right-back for Brazil, plus Raul Asencio who can fill in there as well.”

Team Performance and Offensive Struggles

The team’s recent performances have drawn criticism, particularly due to their inability to score against Liverpool and Rayo. Star forward Kylian Mbappé, a crucial player for the team, also faced scrutiny, as he failed to register a shot on target in either match. Alonso emphasized that the team’s offensive struggles are collective, noting:

“When we struggle to score, we must seek solutions through wingers, midfielders, and set pieces. I am confident that goals will come back.”

Addressing Criticism and Injury Updates

Addressing the ongoing criticism, despite the team standing at the top of the LaLiga table, Alonso remarked:

“We are aware of the high expectations at Real Madrid. We hold ourselves to a high standard after every match and shouldn’t overthink it.”

Furthermore, Alonso discussed the impact of Militao’s recent injury while on international duty. However, he shared some good news regarding Antonio Rüdiger, who is nearing a return to full fitness:

“It’s excellent news to have Rüdiger getting close to a comeback. Although it might not be in time for our next match, we are hopeful for the game against Olimpiacos in Athens. His skill level and personality will be significant for us. While we will miss Militao, Toni’s return is a positive development for the team.”
