Press Conference Highlights
In a recent press conference, Xabi Alonso addressed the tight schedule facing Real Madrid as they prepare to kick off their LaLiga season against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu. The match comes just a mere 15 days after the team embarked on training, following a brief summer break after the Club World Cup. Despite the limited time for preparation, Alonso emphasized that he will not use it as a justification should things not go as planned during the match.
“We would have preferred a longer preparation time for the players, especially after a demanding season, but that’s not the hand we’ve been dealt this year. It is what it is, we’ve only had two weeks to get ready. Regardless, we will not seek excuses. We believe the team is ready to compete, and that’s what matters,” he stated.
Match Preparation and Personnel Updates
Real Madrid had previously sought to delay the match against Osasuna to give the team more time to prepare, but their request was turned down by a judge from the Spanish football federation. The ruling clarified that while players deserve minimum rest, this does not translate into an obligation for extensive physical conditioning before the start of the season.
In terms of personnel, the team recently welcomed Franco Mastantuono, who might make his debut after joining last week, shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday. Alonso praised Mastantuono’s maturity and confidence, suggesting he has quickly acclimated to the squad and could see playing time in the upcoming match.
“He came across as very mature for his age. He didn’t seem overwhelmed by joining such a large club, and in no time, it’s evident he’ll fit in well. His energy and quality will be beneficial for us,” Alonso noted.
Squad Changes and Challenges
This season, the squad has been bolstered with four new players, including notable signings like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, adding depth and competition in various positions. The right-back spot is under particular scrutiny, with Alexander-Arnold contesting for a starting position against club captain Dani Carvajal.
“The competition is fierce in that area, which I think is essential for the squad’s performance as we head into a busy campaign,” he remarked.
However, Alonso will be missing key players for the match, including Jude Bellingham, who is recovering from recent shoulder surgery, alongside injured players like Endrick, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy, with Antonio Rüdiger also serving a suspension.
Stance on LaLiga Fixture
On a broader note, Alonso expressed his approval regarding Real Madrid’s stance against LaLiga’s decision to host a fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami this December, which the club believes creates an unfair competitive advantage.
“We need a consensus on rule changes, especially when it comes to the season’s arrangements. At the beginning of the season, everyone is aware of the rules, and it’s crucial that they remain consistent throughout the competition,” Alonso concluded.
