Wrexham Co-Owner Supports Sheffield Wednesday Fans
Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney, known for his work in the entertainment industry, has voiced his endorsement of a recent decision by Wrexham AFC officials that will permit fans of Sheffield Wednesday to display a banner during their upcoming match this Saturday. This banner is intended to urge Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, to consider selling the club amidst ongoing financial turmoil that has left the organization teetering on the edge of collapse.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Financial Struggles
This summer, Sheffield Wednesday has faced significant challenges, battling multiple financial embargos imposed by the English Football League (EFL) due to serious breaches of fiscal regulations, including the late payment of salaries to players and staff during the months of May, June, and July.
Initially, Wrexham’s supporters group, the Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST), reported that their request to display the banner had been rejected because of its perceived political implications. However, Wrexham management subsequently reversed that stance, allowing the Sheffield Wednesday fans to go ahead with their plan.
Wrexham Supporters Trust’s Statement
Reflecting on their own history, the WST issued a heartfelt statement emphasizing their understanding of the detrimental effects ineffective ownership can have on a club, recalling the time 14 years ago when Wrexham nearly faced expulsion from the Football Conference. At that time, fans rallied together to raise more than £100,000 in a single day to secure the club’s future amid past mismanagement.
“Today, Sheffield Wednesday faces a similar crisis; a historic club, proud in its achievements, now grappling with adversity due to the actions of its owner,” the WST remarked.
Solidarity from Wrexham Fans
As a gesture of solidarity, McElhenney has prompted Wrexham’s supporters to don last season’s away kit in black and gold, with all proceeds generated being directed to assist the WST in their efforts to support the beleaguered Sheffield Wednesday fanbase.
