Wrexham AFC’s Historic Achievement
Despite achieving an unprecedented feat in English football history by securing three consecutive promotions, Wrexham AFC has found itself overlooked in the nominations for the 2025 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) League One Team of the Year. Under the management of Phil Parkinson, the club not only ascended to the EFL Championship last season but also clinched victory in the National League just two years prior.
Surprising Exclusion from PFA Awards
However, the recognition at the PFA Awards ceremony, held in Manchester, eluded all Wrexham players, much to the surprise of fans and analysts alike. The team of the year saw a strong representation from league champions Birmingham City, significantly influenced by the investment of part-owner Tom Brady, a former NFL star. Seven players from Birmingham made the cut for the prestigious squad, with the remaining positions occupied by talents from other clubs, including Lloyd Jones from Charlton Athletic and Richard Kone from Wycombe Wanderers. Notably, League One’s top scorer, Charlie Kelman from Leyton Orient, snagged a spot on the team following an impressive season tallying 21 goals.
Current Challenges for Wrexham
Wrexham, once heralded for their remarkable journey, now grapples with challenges in their new Championship campaign, having suffered defeats in their opening matches against Southampton and West Brom. Their upcoming match with Sheffield Wednesday will be critical, as both teams aim to secure their first points of the season after also starting with two losses.
