Wimbledon Debut: Xu’s Journey Full of Unforgettable Moments

Mimi Xu: A Rising Star in Welsh Tennis

Mimi Xu, a remarkable talent from Swansea, made headlines as the first Welsh athlete to compete in the singles main draw at Wimbledon in two decades. As the tournament unfolds from June 30 to July 13, 2025, fans can catch live coverage of the event through various BBC platforms, including TV, radio, and online services. With her beaming smile and youthful enthusiasm, the 17-year-old is relishing her first Grand Slam experience, describing it as filled with “pinch me moments”.

From Aspiring Player to Wimbledon Competitor

Reflecting on her journey, Xu recalled a time when she was merely an aspiring young player, eagerly waiting for autographs from tennis icons like Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal. Now, the tables have turned, and fans are seeking selfies with her.

“When I was at Aorangi, and people were asking for pictures, it was surreal because I used to be on the other side of the fence,”

she expressed.

Achievements and Milestones

After showcasing her skills in the junior circuit, Xu transitioned to the ladies’ tour this year, achieving significant success at the Birmingham Open, where she notably defeated top seed Alycia Parks. This accomplishment earned her a wildcard entry into the singles and doubles events at Wimbledon, a prestigious milestone for any young player.

In her first-round singles match, much to her excitement, she faced British number one Emma Raducanu, performing admirably despite a loss with scores of 6-3 6-3. Xu stated she “loved every single moment” on Court One, in front of a vibrant crowd of 15,000.

Teamwork and Resilience

Grateful for her opportunities, she filled her player box with former coaches rather than family members, showing her appreciation for their support. In doubles, Xu teamed up with fellow British wildcard Ella McDonald. Together, they celebrated a significant win against Linda Noskova and Rebecca Sramkova, narrowly clinching a victory with a final score of 6-4 6-7 6-3. Xu reflected on their return to form, remembering their joint success three years prior.

“To pick it up from there and keep winning feels great,”

she noted, highlighting the positive spirit they share.

Facing Challenges and Looking Ahead

Xu’s journey continued as she and McDonald faced tougher competition in their next match against the seeded pair Caroline Dolehide and Sophia Kenin, ultimately falling to the stronger duo with a score of 6-2 6-3. Despite the outcome, both players recognized the overall experience as invaluable.

“The atmosphere here is incredible, and being able to compete is a privilege,”

McDonald remarked. Xu added,

“Wimbledon is definitely one of my favorite tournaments, if not the best, due to its vibrant crowds.”

A Special Wimbledon Experience

As her first Wimbledon experience draws to a close, Xu noted that this tournament holds a special place in her heart, especially as it coincides with her last participation in junior events. She triumphed against American player Thea Frodin in her opening junior match, showcasing her resilience by coming from behind to win 2-6 6-4 7-5.

Amidst all the tennis, Xu has been diligently juggling her A Level exams. Reflecting on her future, she plans to use her prize money to enroll in an intensive driving course, demonstrating her commitment to balancing sports and personal growth as she looks towards exciting new challenges ahead.
